National Night Out - August 5, 2008

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Township of Springfield and the Union County Department of Parks and Community Renewal celebrated National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Meisel Park, off Meisel Avenue in Springfield.

National Night Out showcased the Union County Police, Office of Emergency Management, and Springfield Emergency vehicles and equipment. Free hot dogs and water were provided as well as free inflatable rides, games and activities, including a live musical performance by Glen "Wreckin Ball" Waldeck.

Among all those who showcased this year's event were The Springfield Volunteer First Aid Squad who was out in full regalia. The squad had their ambulances out for a look see along with several of volunteer members there to meet and greet all those who attended. This year the squad also handed out First Aid coloring books for the younger attendees showing them the importance of safety and first aid. The volunteer members of the Springfield First Aid Squad also spoke to many who attended about their need for new members. Members are the most important ingredient in the mix needed to provide quality care to our patients, your neighbors.

If you are interested in joining The Springfield Volunteer First Aid Squad, a membership application is available online at springfieldfas.org/volunteer.html. Or, if you are not ready to commit just yet, please drop us an e-mail at membership@springfieldfas.org or call 973-376-2040 and leave a message. We'll get in touch with you to answer any questions. If you are interested, we can arrange for you to ride-along with one of our crews for up to a month to see if this is for you.

No prior experience is needed as the Squad will provide you with the training you need, either in-house or by paying the costs associated with outside training programs. The only requirements are that you be age 16 or older, be in good physical health and be interested in helping others. The First Aid Squad will provide all the training you need, uniforms, a first aid kit, and liability & life insurance.
